Making it simple for you and your pet.

Basic Dog Training.
Why is it so important? There are several reasons you should take the time to train your pet. Besides no body likes a unruly animal especially a non pet owner. A untrained dog can get you into a lot of trouble. Believe me, I hate to admit it but, been there, done that. It wasn't any fun at all. Teaching your dog can be an enjoyable experience for you and your pet. It really helps with the bonding "thing". I know I feel a deeper commitment to the pets I have personally worked with opposed to those I have not. Besides, It's just nicer having a well behaved animal around. No one likes a brat.

First a few tips before we get started with the basic dog training lesson. Always keep in mind that patience and practice "PP" are the keys to pet training. It's best to start training your puppy as young as possible. Basic dog training can begin on a puppy as young as 6 to 8 week old. At any rate, young or old START. Training younger puppies can help with his socializing behavior too. Dogs are social animals and normally love to be around people. So lets not have a rude misbehaved child. Puppies can learn fairly fast if the right approach is taken. Never use forceful methods of training. They will only learn to fear you and this will ruin the bond you are trying to form with your best friend. Force, either by harming or scaring your puppy could also scare him into becoming a fear biter. Positive methods are the best methods for basic dog training. Reinforcing good behavior with food works quite well.

The puppies hard kibble food is a very acceptable treat. I personally like to use a good quality dog treats broken into small pieces. It's just more satisfying for me knowing I'm keeping him on a good diet. The hard treats also help keep his teeth clean. It makes me feel as if I'm doing something special for my friend. Like buying a special feeding dish with his name on it. Really, the animal doesn't know it's his name nor does he care. He most likely doesn't even care that I put his food in a dish. He would be just has happy to eat it off the floor. In fact that's what my two indoor girls do. I feed them in the kitchen in bowls on the floor. They in turn take a mouth full and come out in the living room by me and drop the food from their mouths and then eat it one piece at a time. Talk about social. Anyway, back to the basic dog training lesson.
The time of training also makes a difference. Whatever "your" schedule is, your puppy is learning to conform to it. He will eat, sleep and play around your day. So its best to start your basic dog training at the same time of day, if possible. Right before you puppies scheduled feeding time works well. He is hungry and therefore should be more attentive to you, as you have the food he wants.

Eye contact is always expected. If your puppy is looking around some place else, how can he be paying attention to you? When you give the command verbally also use your hand as a signal. Keep it simple and always the same. I remember taking my German Shepherd puppy to obedience school. Come graduation day I was the one that goofed. He was so smart and trained quite well (I'm blushing). He knew all the verbal commands and all the hand signals. On lead or off. I was so proud of him. I was the one that messed it up for him that last day in class. The instructor calls out different commands to me and I in turn tell the animal. The way you lead off with your step makes a difference in training for obedience. (Stepping first with either the right foot or left foot. More on that later.) That first step is a signal to your dog on what you expect him to do. I being nervous in front of everyone lead the command with the wrong foot. He was suppose to walk with me (heel). Guess what happened. The dog followed what he was taught, stayed at a "sit stay" and lost points. When I went up to get my score the instructor told me that Jake (that was his name) would have graduated with 100% and would have been the best in class. But I had made the mistakes. He passed with a 90. I was still very proud of him. He indeed was my "Very Best Friend".

How and when should you pass out the food? Do it as soon as he does what you expect. Also praise him each time. When he starts getting the hang of it don't be so quick to feed. Save it for when he does the command or trick quickly and well. Once you reach your goal keep giving praise but no more treats. Treats are OK once in awhile, but do in on a random basis. This gives the longest learning potential. Keep a pocket full of treats so you can always feed and praise throughout the day when he listens. Training sessions should last at least 15 minutes a day, every day. If you feel that you want to work twice a day that is fine too. Just make sure it's not to taxing on you pup.

OK, were ready for some basic dog training commands. Work on one command at a time. When your puppy has it down pat, move on to the next. It's easier and less confusing on him. Get yourself a leash about 5 or 6 feet long.
Personalized and many colors to chose from.dog leash
Get a training choke collar. A chain one works well as it can slide up and tighten on him. Never choke you dog. Take the chain collar off after class. There is a right way and a wrong way to put on a choker collar. You'll want to put it on so the ring that the leash hooks to is on top. When you pull up on the leash the collar slides enabling the collar to tighten around his neck. If you have the collar on upside down this smooth action will not occur. Make sure your pet is used to the collar and leash before you begin teaching him. When you are done with the session, remove the collar and tell him what a good dog he is. I always like to say the word "free" and end the lesson time with a good run around and play time. These pictures demonstrates the correct method to use. chain choker collar
Correct. The free end which connects to the lead goes over the dogs neck.
chain choker collar
Wrong. DO NOT PUT THE FREE END UNDER THE DOGS NECK.
Don't forget to take the collar off each time you finish up a lesson. Potential harm or even death could occur if left on unattended.

Basic dog training, Teaching Come.
This one is pretty simple. You wont need to hold the leash for the first part but go ahead and put it on anyway. Hold a treat or food in your fingers. Hold it up in front of your dog and say his name and come. Wave your hand in front of you as if to say come to me. As he comes toward you keep saying the words and waving. As soon as he gets to you give him the food and say good dog. Start this out only a couple feet from in front of your dog. When he gets the first treat take a few steps backwards and repeat this same regime. If after the first few attempts and its not working pick up the end of the leash and give it a slight tug. This should coax him into coming. Practice this for a few day's even if he's so smart that he got it right away. The big test. Have him come when called from across the room. You should only have to say his name and come once. If he responds by coming and he does it every time he's got it. Move on to the next command. Don't for get to praise and treat him.

Basic dog training, Teaching Sit.
Start this command with your dog in a standing position. Don't forget the training collar and leash. Hold the treat or food directly in front of his nose. Say the pets name and sit. (The word sit. Don't you sit) Slowly move the food over his head so his nose is pointing straight up. As his nose goes up his rear end should go down. say "sit" as he assumes the position and give him the treat reward. Be careful not to hold the food to high over his head or the will jump up to get it. If he his having trouble with this on his own then take a hold of the leash. Get down on your knees and holding the food over his noise and saying the command "sit" gently pull back and down on the leash. You can also try pushing his but down to the floor. Give him the treat and say good dog even if you have to help him into position. Soon he will figure out that sitting on his own is what is expected. After that don't help him out anymore. Only treat him and praise him when he does it on his own after that. Before you end the training lessen for the day practice a few times the come command. You need to keep him active on each previous lesson he learns each day.

Basic dog training, Teaching Lie Down.
Collar and leash on. Have your pup on a smooth flat surface. The kitchen floor or some place that has wood or linoleum works nice as you can slide him into place. Begin with the puppy in the sitting position. Give him the sit command but no treat. Tell him he's a good boy or girl. Hold the treat or food in front of his nose. Say his name and the word down. At the same time quickly move your hand with the food in it to the floor between his front paws. Make sure the food is directly in front of him down by his feet. If it's to far out in front he will get up to go get it. When he slides into the down position say the word down and give the treat reward and praise. Give him the sit command and start again. If he is having some trouble with this you can pull his front paw's out from in front of him till he lays down. Or you can take the leash and lightly tug it down to the floor saying "down, down, down" until he's all the way down. Treat and praise him even if you had to do it for him. He'll get it eventually and be able to do it on his own. End your lesson for the day with the other tricks you already taught him.
puppy dog
Basic dog training, Teaching Stay.
This stay command is most difficult for puppy to learn. He is young and wiggly and really would rather follow you than learn sit stay. So staying while you walk away is not much fun for him. But it is of course important that he learn this one. I have heard of dogs getting hit by a car because they wouldn't stay when there owner commanded them too. I hope this never happens to your sweetie. The best time for this one is when your puppy is tired from playing or a long walk. This will help him to be more settled and easy to train.
Collar and leash on. Rewards in you pocket ready for delivery? Lets go.
Start with puppy in the sitting position. Give him the sit command, hand signal and praise but not food. As soon as he his sitting lean in toward him, fix your eyes on his, put the palm of your hand out in front of his nose and say the word "stay". Now is the time you'll want to use a firm voice. Wait one second. DO NOT walk away. Give him a treat and tell him he is good. Do this several times increasing the time a little at a time. When he continues to sit and stay for about 10 seconds then and only then can you take a step or two backwards. Keep your hand out palm to him and say "stay." If you loose eye contact with him move forward and say "stay". Do not rush this and just walk away and expect your pet to say. He wont. Do not use his name either. He will think you want him to come as you taught him this in the come lesson. Each time you take a step or two back wait 10 seconds or so and then go back to him. Lightly praise him and give him his treat reward. Gradually after time when he is sitting and staying with you a few feet from him you can try to walk away. Come right back though. Don't walk far away. Stay in sight for now. He will learn to believe in you that you will always come back. He loves you. A good bonding relationship has already started by now. After he has this mastered go ahead and walk out of site. Come right back though. If you wait too long he will break his sit stay and go looking for you. Or just get board and go off on his own. I did not mention that you should use his leash this time. You don't need to. You really couldn't use it for this anyway. But of course you still had it on him. He should by now have related the collar and leash on to his training session. These guys aren't dumb by any means and whether he told you or not he by now knows what it means. Work your other lessens in at the end of this training day and set him free. Run, play and show him what a good dog he is.
puppy dog
Keep practicing basic dog training with your best friend each day. When your sure he has it all down pat, take off those chains that bind you. Another words remove his collar and leash. Work with him without these tools. Try using just the hand signals with no verbal commands. If he doesn't get it right away keep working he'll get it. By now a couple of months should have passed since you first started. He's got the hang of it and your on you way to a happy well adjusted kid. I mean pet. Keep basic dog training lessons going throughout his life.
