The time of training also makes a difference. Whatever "your" schedule is, your puppy is learning to conform to it. He will eat, sleep and play around your day. So its best to start your basic dog training at the same time of day, if possible. Right before you puppies scheduled feeding time works well. He is hungry and therefore should be more attentive to you, as you have the food he wants. ![]() ![]() ![]()
Correct. The free end which connects to the lead goes over the dogs neck. ![]() Wrong. DO NOT PUT THE FREE END UNDER THE DOGS NECK. Don't forget to take the collar off each time you finish up a lesson. Potential harm or even death could occur if left on unattended.
This one is pretty simple. You wont need to hold the leash for the first part but go ahead and put it on anyway. Hold a treat or food in your fingers. Hold it up in front of your dog and say his name and come. Wave your hand in front of you as if to say come to me. As he comes toward you keep saying the words and waving. As soon as he gets to you give him the food and say good dog. Start this out only a couple feet from in front of your dog. When he gets the first treat take a few steps backwards and repeat this same regime. If after the first few attempts and its not working pick up the end of the leash and give it a slight tug. This should coax him into coming. Practice this for a few day's even if he's so smart that he got it right away. The big test. Have him come when called from across the room. You should only have to say his name and come once. If he responds by coming and he does it every time he's got it. Move on to the next command. Don't for get to praise and treat him. ![]() Start this command with your dog in a standing position. Don't forget the training collar and leash. Hold the treat or food directly in front of his nose. Say the pets name and sit. (The word sit. Don't you sit) Slowly move the food over his head so his nose is pointing straight up. As his nose goes up his rear end should go down. say "sit" as he assumes the position and give him the treat reward. Be careful not to hold the food to high over his head or the will jump up to get it. If he his having trouble with this on his own then take a hold of the leash. Get down on your knees and holding the food over his noise and saying the command "sit" gently pull back and down on the leash. You can also try pushing his but down to the floor. Give him the treat and say good dog even if you have to help him into position. Soon he will figure out that sitting on his own is what is expected. After that don't help him out anymore. Only treat him and praise him when he does it on his own after that. Before you end the training lessen for the day practice a few times the come command. You need to keep him active on each previous lesson he learns each day. ![]() Collar and leash on. Have your pup on a smooth flat surface. The kitchen floor or some place that has wood or linoleum works nice as you can slide him into place. Begin with the puppy in the sitting position. Give him the sit command but no treat. Tell him he's a good boy or girl. Hold the treat or food in front of his nose. Say his name and the word down. At the same time quickly move your hand with the food in it to the floor between his front paws. Make sure the food is directly in front of him down by his feet. If it's to far out in front he will get up to go get it. When he slides into the down position say the word down and give the treat reward and praise. Give him the sit command and start again. If he is having some trouble with this you can pull his front paw's out from in front of him till he lays down. Or you can take the leash and lightly tug it down to the floor saying "down, down, down" until he's all the way down. Treat and praise him even if you had to do it for him. He'll get it eventually and be able to do it on his own. End your lesson for the day with the other tricks you already taught him. ![]() This stay command is most difficult for puppy to learn. He is young and wiggly and really would rather follow you than learn sit stay. So staying while you walk away is not much fun for him. But it is of course important that he learn this one. I have heard of dogs getting hit by a car because they wouldn't stay when there owner commanded them too. I hope this never happens to your sweetie. The best time for this one is when your puppy is tired from playing or a long walk. This will help him to be more settled and easy to train. Collar and leash on. Rewards in you pocket ready for delivery? Lets go. Start with puppy in the sitting position. Give him the sit command, hand signal and praise but not food. As soon as he his sitting lean in toward him, fix your eyes on his, put the palm of your hand out in front of his nose and say the word "stay". Now is the time you'll want to use a firm voice. Wait one second. DO NOT walk away. Give him a treat and tell him he is good. Do this several times increasing the time a little at a time. When he continues to sit and stay for about 10 seconds then and only then can you take a step or two backwards. Keep your hand out palm to him and say "stay." If you loose eye contact with him move forward and say "stay". Do not rush this and just walk away and expect your pet to say. He wont. Do not use his name either. He will think you want him to come as you taught him this in the come lesson. Each time you take a step or two back wait 10 seconds or so and then go back to him. Lightly praise him and give him his treat reward. Gradually after time when he is sitting and staying with you a few feet from him you can try to walk away. Come right back though. Don't walk far away. Stay in sight for now. He will learn to believe in you that you will always come back. He loves you. A good bonding relationship has already started by now. After he has this mastered go ahead and walk out of site. Come right back though. If you wait too long he will break his sit stay and go looking for you. Or just get board and go off on his own. I did not mention that you should use his leash this time. You don't need to. You really couldn't use it for this anyway. But of course you still had it on him. He should by now have related the collar and leash on to his training session. These guys aren't dumb by any means and whether he told you or not he by now knows what it means. Work your other lessens in at the end of this training day and set him free. Run, play and show him what a good dog he is. ![]() ![]() Good luck to you and your "best friend" in all your training activities. Remember to be as committed to him as he is to you.
