German Sheperd Dog Walking
Crate training is a good choice for you and your new friend. It is relatively simple to train any dog to love his "space". He will be more comfortable in a crate if you need to place him on a airplane for whatever reason. The journey will not be nearly as traumatic if he has already learned this place to be his own. Visits to the vet can be more enjoyable also.

Do you have an area in your house you like to be in to relax and call "your space"? Maybe its in the back yard, out in the woods, or in your favorite chair in front of the tv set. Well your pet would like to have his "space" too. If you do it right he will love this spot and retreat to it on his own. He wont mind when you think that it's time he be placed in his special space either.

Crate Training
The benefits for a crate are safety for your pet. Keeping your belongings from being chewed up and the house from being turning in to his personal toilet and of course security (his own space). Don't use the crate as a punishment area or you are defeating its purpose. Always be sure he has had exercise and a time to eliminate before placing in the crate.

Try not to leave him in it for to long at a time or he will have no choice but to soil it. This is something he will not want to do. This will be considered his den and it is a natural instinct not to eliminate in that area. Once this starts to occur you will be cleaning the crate after every time he's in it. If he does have an accident remember that is just what it is, an accident. Do not punish him.

Now that you have some basics lets get started. First finding the right crate for your pet. There are basically two kinds of crates. The hard plastic kinds or the wire collapsible one with a pull out tray on the bottom. Either is fine, your friend wont mind which you choose. It's your preference. Maybe you would prefer the furniture type to blend in with your home furnishings. This is quite nice. Some pets will do better with an exercise ring (play pen), small room or a run. When choosing his crate keep in mind the size your dog will be full grown. He will want his space even when he's an adult. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand and turn around comfortably. You may need to get a bigger one as he grows.

Now that you have his crate what should you do? First set it up in an area of high traffic. Dogs are social animals and will not like being stuck someplace away from the family. His feeding area is a good choice considering its not tucked away from the family. Maybe the living room or bedroom would be a place to consider. Set it up and put some comfy blankets or a pillow inside. Put in some of his toys and a treat or two. Let him enter the crate on his own. Once he gets used to going in and out on his own place him in and close the door, walk away. Make sure this is a time when he has had plenty of exercise and has gone potty. His nap time is best. Stay near by but out of site so you can observe his behavior. He most likely will cry or bark or maybe both. That's OK its only natural. Let him be. After a time he should be quiet. You could try some noise in the area such as a TV or radio. This is sometimes comforting to them just to have some noise nearby. Don't make it to laud though, you want him to be able to rest and enjoy his time. If he hears noise/activity from the home this could cause crying/barking the TV or radio trick could help drown out the sounds.

Never let him out when he is crying or barking. He will soon learn this behavior as being a reward and you will loose the battle. Once he has become quiet let him out and lightly praise him for a good job done. A nice treat reward is always excepted. Take him straight outside as he probably has to go. Gradually increase the time spent in the crate.

What should you do if the crying will not stop? Try not to let him see you doing any of the corrections or he will associate you with the punishment. This could cause fear and anxiety which could cause him to whine more or even soil his cage. First you could try a loud noise like a metal pan falling on the floor (if not carpeted.) Put some stones or coins in a soda can and shake it loudly. Just the startling sounds could be enough to stop him.

A squirt bottle or water gun might be what it will take. If you are really handy try rigging up a remote controlled device to use to startle him enough to stop. I like this one: Take some tin cans or pans and punch holes in them so you can string them together. Tie a long wire or string (heavy fishing line works well) to the bundle of cans/tin pans or whatever you used and rig it up to the ceiling and over to the doorway or place you will be hiding. A small hook or ring works well so you can draw the string through it. When you need to startle your pup pull the string up and down so the pans/cans rattle together and hit the floor. This should cause a bunch of noise to startle him enough. When he is quiet stop the racket. If he starts again pull your string. There are some products you can purchase that will help curb barking like a PetSafe Citronella Spray Bark Control Collar or an alarm. If these things do not work stop using them. Use your imagination as to what will work for you as long as it is safe for your pet and will not harm him in anyway.

This method as stated above should work also for an adult dog. The crate should go ware he normally sleeps. This will help in the adjustment to being "locked in". Gradually increase the time spent inside and your dog will soon learn this as his own and look forward to entering and resting on his own.

When you need to travel with your best friend its a good idea to take the crate along. Get him used to the idea of sleeping in it away from home. He will most likely be looking for "his space" anyway and this will be a comforting area for him that he knows as his own. When you need to take him to a hospital or clinic for neutering or spaying and god forbid an accident or illness this will be much easier on him as he will be used to being locked in a cage or run. Believe me, the Doctors and staff will appreciate this also as it can get quite unbearable at times with rude behaved guest.

Good luck to you and your best friend in all your training activities. Remember to be as committed to him as he is to you. Your love will surely grow.
